Sharing knowledge

We are happy to share our expertise on sustainable construction and the energy transition. In this way we hope to inspire others and accelerate the transformation of the construction industry.

Initiatives we joined in 2023

We joined a number of impactful initiatives, where we share our knowledge and learn from other forward-thinking organisations.

We signed the Circular Construction Manifesto (Manifest Circulair bouwen Limburg) by POM Limburg and Embuild Limburg which provides construction actors with guidance and makes the broad concept of “circular construction” more concrete. Furthermore we’re active in the closely-related work group “Circulair Bouwen” that meets once a quarter.

Another initiative that shows the strong urge to transform the construction industry in Limburg is “Tetra circular conceptbuilding” (Tetra circulair conceptbouwen). Initiated by the university PXL Hasselt, over 50 participants from all over the construction value chain are collaborating to facilitate circular construction methods.

In June 2023, we announced our participation in the Green Deal for Inland Shipping. By embracing inland shipping for our logistical needs, we aim to reduce carbon emissions in transport and reduce traffic congestion.

Flemish Work Agenda for Circular Construction

The transition to a circular construction economy is profound. It requires innovation and a complete change in direction. It demands a new perspective on design, manufacturing, services, consumption, and business models.

The Flemish Work Agenda for Circular Construction (Werkagenda Circulair Bouwen) is set-up by Flanders Circular and various stakeholders from the construction sector that have been working together for several years to achieve systemic change.

10 challenging workstreams were defined, where circular ambitions are linked to objectives in the areas of climate, energy, and quality living, working, and housing.

Cordeel is one of more than 50 participants.

VLAIO Living Lab Hennep+

Bio-based materials such as industrial hemp offer a huge opportunity for the manufacturing and construction industries that need to transition to a more circular economy.

This requires not only a transformation but also new technologies, materials, or processing methods, and most importantly, a shift in mindset towards thinking in terms of supply chains, circular design, and circular business models.

C-biotech is participating in the Vlaio Living Lab Hemp+ which aims to create a network of possibilities for optimal and sustainable value creation from industrial hemp.

By strongly focusing on changing systemic thinking throughout the entire value chain, demand and supply will be better aligned to realize the maximum potential of hemp for the Flemish manufacturing and construction industries.

Signing the Flemish Concrete Agreement

We are proud to be one of the signatories of the Flemish Concrete Agreement, which aligns with Cordeel Group’s sustainability strategy.  The agreement is supported by a wide range of stakeholders including contractors, concrete producers, demolishers, associations, study offices, research centres and government organisations.

The Flemish Concrete Agreement sets ambitious targets for the reduction of CO₂-eq emissions from concrete:

  • By 2030:
    • 50% reduction in CO₂-eq emissions from concrete applied in the Flemish Region compared to 1990 emissions.
    • the design of buildings should provide that concrete elements can be maximally reused or that the functions in the building can be maximally adapted.
    • No more substances will be present in buildings that prevent recycling.
    • Concrete released from demolition whose quality is suitable for the production of high-quality concrete aggregates reused in ready-mixed concrete, road concrete and/or precast concrete.
  • By 2050:
    • Zero CO₂ emission per m³ of concrete used in the Flemish Region
